1. My Life So Far
Our stories are what makes us unique and we are all story tellers. Sharing our stories connects us to eachother. What I’m about to tell you is not my life story but my-life-so-far-story. Lets go back several years and visit a little girl in her room by herself surrounded by her own drawings: her most treasured posession. I didnt understand what I was doing but I can see now that I had a strong nature and desire to create. Never had I expected that I would grow up to be a dancer.
2. Culture vs Passion
Growing up as a very traditional Moroccan girl I was very much aware that the cultural norm of a girl expressing herself through art would be perceived as strange and non-tradional which would make it not okay. Of cours my relatives would rather have me to pursue a career as a doctor or a lawyer. And so I tried my best to pursue such a career, but in my heart I knew I wanted to become an artist and I was very determined to reach this goal. Unaware that I already had a small glimpse of my life’s purpose at a very young age.
3. The Start Of Something Beautiful
As years passed by I started getting great interest in entertainers such as Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson and many more. I would watch their videoclips closely and try to imitate their dancemoves and performances. The way music inspired me gave me a greater need to express and create. At this moment I knew there was a greater way in which I wanted to express myself. So after several years imitating these artists and doing a silly dance in my room I signed up for dance classes at the age of 16, not knowing that this would change my life for ever.
“IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN DO IT”
4. Miracles Do Happen
In a very short period of time it became clear to me that this was the outlet I was searching for all these years. I decided I wanted to dedicate my life to it and study at a dance academy. Of course my parents weren’t to thrilled about this because of the unstable future it would cause for me and the general controversy this would cause in my culture. But because of the love and faith they had in me they made a pact. If I would win 1st place at the big competition I was rehearsing for I would get permission and support in pursuing my dance career. At this point I didnt even come close to winning any competition I entered. But as a great surprise this time around I did win first place and I could say i truly got the biggest reward I could get.
At the age of 17 I began my new adventure at creative college ‘urban dance academy’ after passing the auditions succesfully. Attending all the classes of all the different styles was very challening and difficult at times but brought me so much joy. This is also when I met my new found friends and crew members: ‘The Kulturekids’. Together we trained hours and hours that resulted into competing in several competitions and tv shows and performing at the biggest battle stages of Holland. The amount of inspiration and motivation the Kulturekids gave me made me even more determined to reach all my goals and never give up.
During the years at creative college and training with the Kulturekids it became clear to me that I had a passion for anything involving dance, but I had a particular interest and feeling for choreographing and teaching. This would allow me to express, create and share. And so I started making video’s of all my work and posted them on youtube. This eventually lead to Vincent Vianen asking me to assist him on popular tv show So You Think You Can Dance. After learning so much during this experience I was sure this was what I wanted to do.
7. Here And Now
So that is exactly what i did. At the age of 19 i graduated from creative collage and started teaching and choreographing full time. My life as a fulltime dancer / choreographer / artist & entrepeneur had started. From here i started teaching across the whole country and giving workshops internationally and performing/choreographing for various stages and tv shows and started my own little company AMARNIS and three years later the second AMARNIS Productions.
8. What’s Next
As you might imagine I’ve gained a great deal of wisdom through all these opportunities and experiences. The fact that this all happened so fast is still crazy to me! I found myself on this road without a compass. I just had faith, dedication, determination and lots of positivity!! Of cours I have a jar full of dreams and goals that still need to be achieved. The biggest is probably to inspire others…
So this is where I continue my journey and I invite you all to go on this journey with me.
